PATENT REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
IN QATAR

Qatar's Economy:
Qatar, in Western Asia, has the 4th highest GDP (PPP) per capita (2020) and ranks 3rd globally in natural gas reserves. It leads LNG exports, has low tax rates, and offers a high standard of living due to its oil and gas wealth.

Economic Highlights:
Qatar regained its title as the world’s richest nation in 2012, with a GDP per capita (PPP) of $106,000. Its GDP reached $182bn that year, fueled by gas exports and high oil prices. The Qatar Investment Authority, with $115bn in assets, ranked 12th globally among sovereign wealth funds.

Patent Registration:
Patent registration in Qatar is governed by Qatar Patent Law (No. 30 of 2006). Inventors and companies can apply online via the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI). Submissions are reviewed for quality, offering efficient and timely decisions.

Patents shall be available for any inventions, provided that they are new, involve an inventive step and are capable of industrial application whether they are related to new industrial products, modem industrial techniques and devices, or common industrial methods. Besides, it shall not be contradicting with the provisions of Islamic Sharia' (Law), violating the public order, ethics or national security.

The patent subject may be in the form of material product, an industrial process or a manufacturing technique. Subject to the law hereby, patentability shall not include:

  • Scientific theories, mathematical methods, computer programs, exercise of pure intellectual activities, or practice of a specific game;

  • Plants and animals’ researches, and essentially biological processes for the production of plants or animals other than microbiological processes and its productions; and

  • Diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical methods for the treatment of humans or animals and its productions.
